WHAT TO PLANT IN SEPTEMBER!

September is one of my favorite months in the garden. It's a time of transitions, filled with opportunities to grow, harvest, and prepare for the cool season.

In my kitchen garden (and many of our client gardens), space is limited, so I need to make decisions about which warm season plants to keep, remove, and prioritize for cool season crops. I ask myself a few questions to decide what to remove:

-Is the plant still productive?

-Am I still enjoying the harvests or am I sick of it?

-Does it look healthy?

-Is it taking up too much space?

Another option is to fill in the gaps in your garden with fast growing crops, such as radishes, lettuce mixes, and other greens.

If you have a larger garden, you can plant cool season crops alongside your summer plants. I prioritize plants like cauliflower and broccoli that take longer to grow and prefer to be planted when the air and soil are still warm.

It is also a great time for seed starting in your greenhouse, Outdoors in a protected area, or instide with grow lights. Check our lists for what to start by seed now.

What will you be planting in your cool season garden?
